2.1.1. Recorded Cases of Trafficking in Uganda
The Government of Uganda and other stakeholders have undertaken significant efforts to identify, investigate, and prosecute cases of trafficking in persons. Recent Government statistics show:
- There were 668 cases of trafficking in persons registered in 2022, of which 532 were cases of child trafficking.[1]
- Government investigated 421 incidents of trafficking in 2021, involving 501 suspects. [2]
- Prosecutions were initiated in 403 cases in 2021, involving 537 alleged traffickers.
- Only 30 convictions were secured in 2021—an increase from 11 convictions in 2020, and the highest number of convictions ever reported in a year.
The difference between prosecutions and convictions signals the gaps and delays that exist in the justice system.
The number of victims of trafficking registered in Uganda has shown an overall increase from 2012-2022, although this has not been a sustained pattern year on year.[1] From 2012-2022, the total number of registered victims in the country ranged from 270 (in 2016) to 1,200 (in 2022). Notable decreases in identification were recorded in 2013, 2016, and 2019, although the overall trajectory showed increases. Ugandan nationals have also been identified as victims of trafficking in other countries
