6.2.3. The Shelter Living Environment
While receiving shelter services, survivors should be offered an initial first aid assessment and basic medical care for any injuries or ailments. Survivors frequently suffer from shock and trauma on arrival to shelters and it is important to give them time to settle into the shelter before arranging medical appointments for them. Emergency medical care should be immediately provided,[1] but less urgent care should follow after a short period of time. Survivors should receive referrals to additional medical care if required.
[1] The Children (Approved Homes) Rules 2013 specify that a registered nurse must be employed as a full-time staff member or an alternative health care system be provided (section 11) and that an examination by a medical practitioner be conducted within 48 hours of admission.
